Elementary
At this level, you can handle basic, everyday situations. You can introduce yourself and others, and ask simple questions about personal information, like where someone lives. You can also understand basic directions as long as the person speaks slowly and is willing to help.
A2
Pre-intermediate
You can understand common phrases and sentences about things you encounter every day, such as shopping, family, or your job. You can have simple conversations and describe your background and immediate surroundings.
B1
Intermediate
You can understand the main points of everyday conversations, whether at school, work, or during your free time. You can handle most situations while traveling in an English-speaking area. You can also write simple, connected paragraphs about topics you know and care about, and you can describe your experiences, hopes, and plans.
B2
Upper Intermediate
You can grasp the key ideas of complex topics, even when they're technical or abstract. You can have smooth, natural conversations with native speakers without either of you having to strain. You can write clear and detailed texts on many subjects and can present your opinion on a topic, outlining the pros and cons.
C1
Advanced
You can understand long, challenging texts and grasp meanings that aren't directly stated. You can speak fluently and spontaneously, expressing yourself without a lot of hesitation. You can use English flexibly in social, academic, and professional settings. You can also write clear, detailed, and well-organized texts on complex subjects.
C2
Proficiency
You can easily understand almost everything you hear or read. You can summarize information from various sources and present it in a logical, well-structured way. You can express yourself very fluently and precisely, even in the most complicated situations, and can pick up on subtle differences in meaning.
